On March 14th, the Senate Finance Committee passed a roads bill. Finance Committee Members approved a bill that would provide nearly $800 million a year and would increase the gas tax by 12 cents over the next six years. The vehicle sales tax would be raised to $600. Several Senators have mentioned that when the bill is debated on the Senate floor, amendments may be offered to restructure the Department of Transportation and help provide tax relief to South Carolinians. However, the odds of passing a roads and infrastructure bill in 2017 that includes raising the gas tax are not favorable.
