Issue Update from the Statehouse
by David Black, Director of Government Affairs

We are now more than halfway through the 1st regular session of the 122nd General Assembly. The General Assembly has been busy at work addressing a wide variety of issues that need immediate attention, including pension reform, the annual budget, roads funding, dam safety, and automatic stay. Lawmakers in Columbia are also facing a shorter session for the first time due to a new law passed last year allowing for adjournment by the second Thursday in May. The Senate and the House will soon be going to conference on several bills passed in each chamber during the past three months. As the General Assembly moves forward, the HBASC will continue working with the legislators to produce legislation that reduces the overregulation of business, promotes opportunities to create and expand a strong workforce, and brings fairness to a tax system that is complicated and burdensome to employers and employees.
